A highly decorative antique George Henckel large sterling pendant ball pin cushion dating to the early 20th century, circa 1910s. Formed as a spherical hanging ball with ornate pierced sterling silver overlay decoration over a deep cobalt blue cushion body, complete with original suspension loop finial. Marked ‘Sterling’, pattern number ‘89’ and with the Henckel maker’s mark, although the mark is partially rubbed through age and handling. Measuring approximately 2” in diameter excluding the loop and weighing 67.2g. The design unscrews into two sections as intended, allowing access to the interior, although the piece has been left unopened to preserve its originality for the next owner. The cushion body now has a slightly egg-shaped appearance rather than a perfect sphere, most likely from age and decades of gentle handling beneath the silver overlay. There are also some worn and thinner areas to the exposed cushion material consistent with genuine antique use. A particularly attractive and increasingly sought-after example of antique sewing memorabilia combining sterling silver, vanity and sewing collectable appeal, with excellent display presence and striking contrast between the pierced silverwork and cobalt blue ground.
