Antique CDV photo of Māori Chief Īhaka Whaanga by Burton Brothers of Dunedin, New Zealand, dating from the 19th century. Whaanga (c.1790–1875) was a Ngāti Kahungunu chief from the Māhia Peninsula and an important figure in the history of Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast during the 19th century. The photograph shows Whaanga wearing traditional Māori clothing and is mounted in the usual carte de visite format, with Burton Brothers details to the reverse. A good original early New Zealand photograph of a well-known Māori figure by one of the country’s best-known 19th century photographic studios.
