Antique CDV Photo Māori Woman Moko Hei Tiki Korowai Foy Bros New Zealand. Original late 19th century carte de visite photograph by Foy Bros., photographers of Thames, New Zealand, showing a Māori woman wearing moko kauae, hei tiki, huia feathers and a traditional korowai. The portrait dates from around 1880 and other examples of the image are known, including versions described as a detail from a full-length portrait. The reverse has an interesting contemporary handwritten inscription which appears to read “From Uncle John to Connie” followed by what may be the name “Ghislane”, together with “New Zealand” and the date “May 18th /80”. The possible name has not been confirmed and the sitter appears to be unidentified in other catalogued examples of this portrait. A striking original early New Zealand photograph with some light age-related wear as shown.
